Chicana/o/x Affirmative Therapy: Clinical Responsiveness & Mental Health

Introductory Level – Level 1

This is a 3 Session On-line Training on a clinical approach to working successfully with Chicanx & Latinx clients. The entire series is a total of 7.5 hrs. with each session being 2.5 hrs. Participants will gain a foundation for culturally responsive therapy from a Chicanx Affirmative approach. The total cost for all 3 sessions is $150.

What is Chicana/o/x Affirmative Therapy?
It is an approach that assumes centralizing culture and a positive perception of one’s own culture background can and should be facilitated in psychotherapy with Chicana/o/x and Latina/o/x clients.  
As a result of this training participants will:

  1. Understand the framework for a Chicana/o/x Affirmative Therapy
  2. Understand how a focus on identity, family, and spirituality are key in a Chicanx Affirmative
    approach.
  3. Learn to be culturally responsive to Chicana/x/o culture in clinical interactions
  4. Gain an understanding of varying notions of mental well-being from a Chicana/o/x perspective
  5. Apply these concepts with case scenarios in each training session

Required evaluations and session assessments will be sent to participants after each session. After all 3 sessions and evaluations are completed, participants will be awarded a certificate of training completion in Chicana/o/x Affirmative Therapy – Foundational Level from The Institute of Chicana/o Psychology.

Features of the training series are: Constructing Chicana/o/x wellness & well-being, the roles of identity, family, and spirituality for Chicana/o/x mental health, facilitating a reconnection to current and ancestral cultural strengths in clinical practice, aspects of Chicana/o/x culture that complements the practice of counseling & therapy, values & assumptions of the mental health field that are not congruent with Chicana/o/x wellness culture, the impacts of marginalization and discrimination on Chicana/o/x well-being on an individual and community level, and the inclusion of historical trauma in the treatment of Chicana/o/x populations.

Participants will receive their Zoom link to each training session 30 minutes before the session begins.

Session 1, November 21 – 11:00am – 1:30pm.

Session 2, December 12 – 11:00am – 1:30pm

Session 3, January 9 – 11:00am – 1:30pm

Participants will be required to respond to what they learned in each session via an evaluation. The training sessions will be recorded and the recorded sessions will be available after the live date. So, participants may still receive credit for attending if they view the recording and respond to the evaluation of each session. You may register at the link below:
