Reclaiming Ancestral Foods for Personal and Collective Well-being

Join us for this workshop-plática on original foods of present-day Mexico and their culinary and medicinal uses over millennia. Dr. Lilliana Saldaña, professor of Mexican American Studies & Institute presenter, will facilitate this community workshop platica. Drawing from Indigenous codices, chronicles, scholarly works and the knowledge she’s learned from elders and knowledge keepers, Dr. Saldaña will share ways in which we can indigenize
our diet for personal and collective healing and wellness.
Participants will:
– Learn about Mesoamerican agriculture
– Extend knowledge on Indigenous foods / alimentos originarios, past and present
– Amplify conocimiento on culinary and medicinal uses of indigenous plants
– Share ways to reclaim and sustain indigenous culinary knowledge and practices within the context of global capitalism

Dr. Lilliana Saldaña

Dr. Saldaña’s Bio

Lilliana Patricia Saldaña, Ph.D. is a Xicana activist scholar from San Antonio, Texas, and is an Associate Professor of Mexican American Studies (MAS) at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She also serves as co-director of the MAS Teacher’s Academy – the only academy of its kind to support educators who want to teach MAS in their K-12 classrooms,

Lilliana is currently pursuing her diplomado/certificate in History of Mexican Gastronomy through La Escuela de Gastronomia in Mexico City. When she is not teaching or doing public scholarship, she is learning about Mesoamerican
gastronomy and Indigenous foodways to share through “Taller Chicomecoatl” – community-based cooking workshops. Inspired by her mama (the best cook she knows) and her family’s struggles with diabetes, Lilliana’s vision as a teacher,
cook, and activist is to encourage people in her community to reclaim and sustain Indigenous foods for personal and collective well-being.

This will be a Zoom event and Zoom links will sent to participants 30mins before the event begins.
