Being a Brown Teenager: Identity, Power, y Familia

October 29th, 10am – 1pm CDT

This workshop platica will focus on some of the issues Brown/Chicanx youth face in current society and the concerns that parents have about raising them in today’s world. Our teens & pre-teens face many negative stereotypes in a society that often fears them or does not understand them. Much of these impacts manifest within family interactions. Schools disproportionately criminalize our youth (e.g., school to prison pipeline, unfair discipline) and place low academic expectations on them. Parents and families often have concerns about their future and safety as Brown youth in society. In addition there are often questions about appropriate discipline while also trying to positively guide their growth. Research and literature in Chicanx Psychology offers us some ways of addressing these issues. We will explore the role that a strong cultural identity can have on the healthy development of our youth, including knowledge from our ancestral heritage. We will discuss ways to strengthen our families & our youth during these times. Chicanx Psychology is about community liberation and healing.
